Start 2025 Right: BSIF Urges Workplaces to Check and Refresh PPE

As the new year begins, the British Safety Industry Federation (BSIF) is urging UK employers and workers to prioritise safety by reviewing and replacing outdated or damaged personal protective equipment (PPE).

A recent survey conducted among BSIF members has revealed alarming issues with the condition and compliance of PPE in workplaces across the country. These findings highlight an urgent need for action to ensure worker safety and compliance with legal standards.

Common PPE Failures Highlighted by the BSIF

The survey revealed widespread problems with the state of PPE being used on-site, including:

  1. Hi-Vis Clothing No Longer Visible
High-visibility clothing, crucial for worker safety in many environments, was frequently found to be so dirty or worn that it no longer served its purpose.
  2. Damaged Safety Helmets
Helmets with cracks, dents, or other visible damage were alarmingly still in use, putting workers at risk of head injuries.
  3. Ripped and Worn Protective Clothing & Lanyards
Protective garments and fall protection, designed to shield workers from hazards, were often torn, frayed, or poorly maintained.
  4. Expired Respiratory Protection
Disposable masks well past their expiry dates were still being used, exposing workers to respiratory risks.

Cutting Corners on Safety

The BSIF survey also highlighted a troubling trend: employers prioritising cost savings over safety compliance. Many workplaces are using cheap, non-compliant products that may save money initially but put workers in harm’s way.

Misuse of PPE is another significant issue. Workers were found wearing improperly fitted helmets or gloves, making the equipment less effective and increasing the risk of accidents.

Alan Murray, CEO of the BSIF, warned of the dangers of this approach:

“It’s not enough to simply have PPE available on-site. It must be in good condition and used properly to protect workers. The idea that ‘any PPE is good enough’ is a dangerous misconception that puts lives at risk.”

A Call to Action for 2025

The BSIF is calling on employers to make PPE safety a priority in 2025 by taking the following steps:

  • Inspect Current PPE: Thoroughly check all equipment for signs of damage, wear, or expiry.
  • Replace Outdated or Non-Compliant Gear: Ensure all PPE meets current safety standards.
  • Source PPE from Trusted Suppliers: Buy only from trustworthy sources to guarantee compliance and quality.

New Campaigns to Promote Safety

To keep safety at the forefront, the BSIF is launching a new campaign, “PPE Saves Lives,” this spring. This initiative will focus on educating workplaces about the importance of compliant and properly maintained PPE.

Additionally, the BSIF will release a detailed report in February, shedding more light on the prevalence of non-compliant PPE and its risks.
