Scaffolding Estimator Course – Practical Training with Industry Expert Paul Crabtree

Scaffolding Estimating: Building Commercial Confidence from the First Enquiry to Final Quote

The Scaffolding Estimator Course from Safety & Access provides practical training for scaffold estimators, contracts managers and depot managers responsible for pricing scaffold projects. Delivered by industry expert Paul Crabtree, the course covers scaffold estimating from the first enquiry through to quotation preparation, contract awareness and cost control.

In the scaffolding industry, successful projects begin long before the first tube is erected. The foundation of every profitable job is accurate estimating, clear quotations, and a strong understanding of contractual obligations.

That’s why Safety & Access is delivering a Scaffolding Estimator Course designed specifically for those responsible for pricing, planning and managing scaffold projects.

Led by one of the most experienced figures in the industry, Paul Crabtree, this course provides practical insight into the full estimating process – from the first client enquiry through to the preparation of professional quotations and contract documentation.

Why Scaffolding Estimating Matters

Inaccurate estimating or poorly structured quotations can expose scaffolding companies to significant financial risk. Misunderstood contract terms, incorrect measurements, or missing cost factors can quickly turn a profitable project into a costly dispute.

A structured estimating process helps businesses:

  • Accurately price scaffold projects

  • Understand contractual risks

  • Avoid costly disputes and variations

  • Improve communication with clients and contractors

  • Protect profit margins

This course focuses on developing both the technical and commercial knowledge required to estimate scaffold work confidently and professionally.

What the Course Covers

The course takes delegates through the entire estimating journey, combining classroom theory with practical application.

Key learning objectives include:

  • Understanding the estimating process from enquiry to quotation

  • Identifying customer requirements

  • Practical and theoretical use of estimating formulae

  • Identifying site hazards and cost implications

  • Practical on-site measuring

  • Using construction and scaffolding design drawings

  • Measuring drawings accurately

  • Material breakdown using estimating formulae

  • Practical preparation of quotations

  • Writing contract quotation letters

  • Understanding day work costing

  • Recognising common enquiry pitfalls

  • Introduction to computer-based estimating and contract administration

  • Completing a full estimating project exercise

  • Reviewing real-world estimating scenarios

By the end of the course, delegates will have a clear understanding of how to produce robust scaffold estimates and professional contract quotations.

Learn from One of the Industry’s Most Experienced Estimators

This course is delivered by Paul Crabtree, whose career in scaffolding spans more than 50 years.

Paul’s journey began with SGB, where he started on the tools before moving into estimating and gaining a distinction in estimating while studying general building at college. Over the years he has worked across every level of the scaffolding business, from site supervisor managing teams of 18 scaffolders, to managing multiple depots including the Birmingham operation.

Throughout his career, Paul has been responsible for estimating, valuation, contract review and final account agreement, giving him deep insight into how scaffold projects succeed, or fail commercially.

Following the recession of the 1990s, Paul became self-employed and has since spent decades supporting scaffolding companies with:

  • Contract review and quote wording

  • Site administration procedures

  • Variation management

  • Valuation of works and extra hire

  • Commercial dispute resolution

Paul has also been involved in around 30 adjudications acting on behalf of scaffolding companies, including disputes worth hundreds of thousands, and even millions of pounds. In every case, the outcome has depended on accurate estimates, well-worded quotations and strong documentation.

His message is simple:

Good estimating, clear quotation wording and understanding the contract from the outset can prevent most disputes before they ever begin.

This course gives delegates the opportunity to learn directly from someone who has seen every stage of scaffolding commercial management over five decades.

Who Should Attend?

The course is ideal for:

  • Scaffolding estimators

  • Contracts managers

  • Depot managers

  • Project managers

  • Supervisors moving into estimating roles

  • Scaffold company directors

Whether you are new to estimating or looking to strengthen your commercial knowledge, the course provides practical tools that can be applied immediately.

Practical Learning with Real Industry Insight

Unlike purely theoretical training, this course focuses on real-world scaffolding scenarios.

Delegates will work through practical exercises including:

  • Measuring scaffold requirements

  • Interpreting drawings

  • Preparing quotations

  • Reviewing contract wording

  • Understanding variation claims and extra hire

These exercises ensure learners leave with practical estimating skills, not just theory.

Protecting Profit in Scaffolding Projects

Many disputes in the scaffolding sector arise from misunderstandings around:

  • Extra hire

  • Variations

  • Programme changes

  • Contract terms

As Paul often reminds companies he works with:

Most disagreements start with one simple question – what does the contract say?

By understanding estimating principles and the importance of clear documentation, scaffold companies can protect themselves from costly contractual pitfalls.
