CITB SSSTS Course | Site Supervision Safety Training Scheme – Humberside

The SSSTS (Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme) is a CITB-accredited qualification designed for site supervisors, team leaders and those with supervisory responsibilities on construction sites.

The course focuses on the legal duties, safety responsibilities and practical controls required to supervise work safely and effectively on site.

The SSSTS course is suitable for:

• Site Supervisors

• Gangers / Chargehands

• Team Leaders

• Foremen

• Junior Managers

• Anyone moving from operative to supervisory roles

It is widely used across construction, civil engineering, utilities, refurbishment, maintenance and infrastructure projects.

SSSTS is not a legal requirement, but it is widely considered the industry benchmark qualification for site supervisors.

Many principal contractors and clients require SSSTS to demonstrate that supervisors understand their duties under the Health & Safety at Work Act and CDM Regulations.

The SSSTS course lasts 2 days.

It is typically delivered as:

• 2 consecutive classroom days, or

• Live virtual classroom delivery (where available and CITB-approved)

SSSTS is not self-paced eLearning. CITB requires live delivery to ensure interaction, discussion and assessment integrity.

• CDM Regulations (Supervisor duties)

• Risk assessments and method statements (RAMS)

• Toolbox talks and site inductions

• Working at height

• Excavations

• Fire safety

• Behavioural safety

• Accident reporting and investigations

Assessment includes:

• Tutor observation and participation

• Group exercises

• A multiple-choice exam at the end of the course

Full attendance is required to achieve certification.

The course is challenging but very achievable.

Delegates who:

• Attend both days

• Engage in discussions

• Have a basic understanding of site operations generally pass without difficulty. Tutors provide guidance throughout.

The pass mark for SSSTS is set by CITB at 80%

Delegates must:

• Attend the full course

• Pass the final assessment

• Demonstrate engagement during learning activities

If you fail:

• You may be eligible for a resit, subject to CITB rules

• Resits must be completed within the approved timeframe

The SSSTS certificate is valid for 5 years.

The SSSTS Refresher is a 1-day course designed for those who hold a valid, in-date SSSTS certificate.

It updates delegates on:

• Changes in legislation

• Industry best practice

• Common site safety failings

• Supervisor responsibilities

If your SSSTS certificate expires, you cannot take the refresher course.

You must retake the full 2-day SSSTS course again.

Safety & Access strongly recommends booking the refresher well before the expiry date.

Yes. SSSTS is often a stepping stone to SMSTS.

Supervisors progressing into management roles commonly move on to the SMSTS course once they take on greater responsibility for planning and controlling work.

No. A CSCS card is not required to attend SSSTS.

However, many supervisors will already hold a Gold Supervisor CSCS Card or use SSSTS to support their application.

There are no formal qualification requirements, but delegates should:

• Have construction site experience

• Be able to read, write and speak English confidently
