I recently (Sept 21) attended a 3 day scaffold course here. The centre is well organised with friendly staff and a professional team of instructors who made sure that you have sufficient knowledge to pass the tests.Lunch was provided by "Posh Nosh" and was also very good. The only thing to be aware of is the parking situation. If the centre is busy the car park can fill up quickly meaning that you may have to park some distance away due to DPD taking up most spaces with their fleet of vans so get there early to avoid any hassle.

I recently completed the Basic Scaffold Inspector 3-day course at Safety & Access Ltd. From initial contact to the end of the course, everything was handled smoothly and professionally.I'd recommend the course to anyone who has scaffold structures up on site - it's informative with comprehensive detail about materials, fittings, ties & inspection procedures. Many thanks to instructor Andy Ferguson, an ex scaffolder who really knows his stuff.

What is the SSSTS course?

The SSSTS (Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme) is a CITB-accredited qualification designed for site supervisors, team leaders and those with supervisory responsibilities on construction sites.

The course focuses on the legal duties, safety responsibilities and practical controls required to supervise work safely and effectively on site.

Who should take the SSSTS course?

The SSSTS course is suitable for:

  • Site Supervisors

  • Gangers / Chargehands

  • Team Leaders

  • Foremen

  • Junior Managers

  • Anyone moving from operative to supervisory roles

It is widely used across construction, civil engineering, utilities, refurbishment, maintenance and infrastructure projects.

Is SSSTS a legal requirement?

SSSTS is not a legal requirement, but it is widely considered the industry benchmark qualification for site supervisors.

Many principal contractors and clients require SSSTS to demonstrate that supervisors understand their duties under the Health & Safety at Work Act and CDM Regulations.

How long does the SSSTS course last?

The SSSTS course lasts 2 days.

It is typically delivered as:

  • 2 consecutive classroom days, or

  • Live virtual classroom delivery (where available and CITB-approved)

Is the SSSTS course classroom-based or online?

Safety & Access delivers SSSTS as:

  • Classroom-based training

  • Live virtual classroom training (tutor-led, real-time)

SSSTS is not self-paced eLearning. CITB requires live delivery to ensure interaction, discussion and assessment integrity.

What does the SSSTS course cover?

Key topics include:

  • Health & Safety at Work Act

  • Supervisors’ legal responsibilities

  • CDM Regulations (Supervisor duties)

  • Risk assessments and method statements (RAMS)

  • Toolbox talks and site inductions

  • Working at height

  • Excavations

  • Fire safety

  • Behavioural safety

  • Accident reporting and investigations

How is the SSSTS course assessed?

Assessment includes:

  • Tutor observation and participation

  • Group exercises

  • A multiple-choice exam at the end of the course

Full attendance is required to achieve certification.

Is the SSSTS course hard?

The course is challenging but very achievable.

Delegates who:

  • Attend both days

  • Engage in discussions

  • Have a basic understanding of site operations generally pass without difficulty. Tutors provide guidance throughout.

What is the SSSTS pass mark?

The pass mark for SSSTS is set by CITB at 80%

Delegates must:

  • Attend the full course

  • Pass the final assessment

  • Demonstrate engagement during learning activities

What happens if I fail the SSSTS exam?

If you fail:

  • You may be eligible for a resit, subject to CITB rules

  • Resits must be completed within the approved timeframe

Safety & Access will advise on available options if required.

How long is the SSSTS certificate valid for?

The SSSTS certificate is valid for 5 years.

What is the SSSTS Refresher course?

The SSSTS Refresher is a 1-day course designed for those who hold a valid, in-date SSSTS certificate.

It updates delegates on:

  • Changes in legislation

  • Industry best practice

  • Common site safety failings

  • Supervisor responsibilities

What happens if my SSSTS certificate has expired?

If your SSSTS certificate expires, you cannot take the refresher course.

You must retake the full 2-day SSSTS course again.

Safety & Access strongly recommends booking the refresher well before the expiry date.

Can I progress from SSSTS to SMSTS?

Yes. SSSTS is often a stepping stone to SMSTS.

Supervisors progressing into management roles commonly move on to the SMSTS course once they take on greater responsibility for planning and controlling work.

How do I book the SSSTS course?

You can book:

  • Online via the Safety & Access website

  • By phone or email with our training team

  • As an individual or group booking

Our team will also help confirm whether you need the full course or refresher.

Do I need a CSCS card to take SSSTS?

No. A CSCS card is not required to attend SSSTS.

However, many supervisors will already hold a Gold Supervisor CSCS Card or use SSSTS to support their application.

Does SSSTS help with a CSCS card?

Yes. SSSTS can support applications for:

  • Gold CSCS Supervisor Card

(Additional qualifications or NVQs may be required depending on card type.)

Are there entry requirements for SSSTS?

There are no formal qualification requirements, but delegates should:

  • Have construction site experience

  • Be able to read, write and speak English confidently

  • Be comfortable participating in discussions and assessments

Can employers book SSSTS for groups?

Yes. Safety & Access offers:

  • Group bookings

  • On-site SSSTS delivery

  • Bespoke course dates for companies

This is ideal for employers developing supervisory capability across teams.

Is SSSTS recognised by the HSE?

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) does not approve individual courses, but SSSTS is widely recognised across the construction industry and demonstrates supervisor competency and compliance with CDM expectations.

Why choose Safety & Access for SSSTS training?
  • CITB-approved training provider
  • Highly experienced construction tutors

  • Strong pass rates

  • Approved classroom locations

  • Clear guidance on refresher and progression routes

  • Support before, during and after the course
