Vertical Lifeline Systems

Climbing a fixed ladder, mast or tower is one of the highest-risk tasks on site. Our vertical lifelines let workers climb hands-free, protected every step of the way.

  • EN 353-1:2014+A1:2017 & EN 365
  • Cable or rail systems
  • Retrofit to existing ladders
How it works

A lifeline that climbs with you

A vertical lifeline is a fixed cable or rail fitted to a ladder or vertical structure, with a rope grab or traveller that moves with the worker as they climb. If they slip, the device locks onto the line instantly and stops the fall before it builds speed.

We fit vertical lifelines to fixed ladders, masts, pylons, wind turbines, chimneys and communication towers — anywhere people climb regularly for maintenance or inspection.

What is a vertical lifeline?

A fall protection system fitted to a fixed ladder or vertical structure. It combines a cable or rail with a rope grab or traveller that moves with the climber and locks in place if they fall.

What are the three types of lifeline?

Vertical lifelines for ladders and towers, horizontal lifelines along a roof or structure, and overhead rigid lifelines for low-clearance areas. We supply and install all three.

When does a ladder need a vertical lifeline?

It depends on a site-specific risk assessment. As a general rule, any fixed ladder with a significant unprotected climb that is used regularly should be assessed for a vertical lifeline or equivalent protection.

What is the difference between vertical and horizontal lifelines?

A vertical lifeline protects someone climbing up or down, such as on a ladder or tower. A horizontal lifeline protects someone moving side to side, such as across a roof. Some sites need both.

Does a vertical lifeline need regular inspection?

Yes. Users should check it visually before each climb, and a competent person should inspect the cable or rail, brackets and anchorage at regular intervals.

Can a vertical lifeline be fitted to an existing ladder?

Yes. Systems such as 3M Protecta Cabloc and GlideLoc GuideRail can be retrofitted to existing fixed ladders as well as specified for new ones.
