Rooflights & fragile roofs

Roof Skylight Protection

Skylights are one of the most common causes of fatal falls during roof work, and almost every one is preventable. We stop the risk at source.

  • BS EN 1873:2014+A1:2016 & ACR[M]001:2019
  • No roof penetration

What it is

Stop falls through fragile rooflights

Roof skylight protection is any system that stops a person or object falling through a fragile skylight or rooflight. Some systems are collective, protecting everyone on the roof with no equipment needed; others are personal, used with a harness and anchor.

We supply and install Kee Cover and Kee Dome systems, removing the risk at source and keeping your roof compliant with the Work at Height Regulations 2005.

  • Industrial buildings with maintenance access
  • Warehouses, factories and distribution centres
  • Commercial roofs with plant, ductwork or solar
  • Schools, hospitals and public buildings

Why it is essential

Rooflights often look safer than they are

Many skylights look solid, especially when dirty or weathered, but they are classed as fragile in law and can give way without warning.

  • Glass, GRP or plastic panels that were never designed to take weight
  • UV and weather degradation that often can't be seen from above
  • Poor visibility where a skylight blends into the roof
  • A false sense of security among people who assume the roof is safe

Types of skylight protection

Kee Cover rooflight covers

A mesh panel on a galvanised steel frame that clamps over the rooflight with no penetration, so light still gets through. Tested to BS EN 1873:2014+A1:2016 (1,200 J impact) and the ACR Red Book, ACR[M]001:2019. Best for standing seam and trapezoidal roofs.

Kee Dome skylight railing

A freestanding modular guardrail built from Kee Klamp fittings that surrounds the skylight, with no roof penetration. Complies with BS EN ISO 14122-3:2016. Best for flat membrane roofs of 3° or less.

Temporary protection

For short jobs such as repairs, resealing or solar installs, CoverLite gives quick, reusable cover. See temporary skylight protection.

Why every business needs it

Compliance, prevention and peace of mind

Legal compliance

Accident prevention

Simple measures like Kee Cover or Kee Dome prevent fatal falls.

Reduced liability

Proper protection helps avoid prosecution and insurance complications.

UK standards

Skylight protection isn't optional

The Work at Height Regulations 2005 require employers to prevent or minimise the risk of falls through fragile surfaces, and skylights are treated as fragile in law whatever they look like.

Kee Cover is tested to BS EN 1873:2014+A1:2016 and the ACR Red Book (ACR[M]001:2019); Kee Dome complies with BS EN ISO 14122-3:2016. All skylight protection should be inspected by a competent person at least annually, and again after roof work, alterations or severe weather.

What must skylights on a roof be protected by?

A suitable control measure under the Work at Height Regulations 2005: either collective protection, such as a Kee Cover rooflight cover or Kee Dome railing, or a personal fall protection system used with a harness and anchor.

What is the difference between Kee Cover and Kee Dome?

Kee Cover is a mesh panel that clamps directly over the rooflight, so it suits standing seam and metal profile roofs. Kee Dome is a freestanding guardrail around the skylight and suits flat membrane roofs with a shallow pitch.

Can you walk on a Kee Cover?

No. Kee Cover stops a fall through the rooflight but isn't a walking surface. Where routine access is needed it is paired with a guarded walkway such as Kee Walk.

Does skylight protection block natural light?

No. Kee Cover uses an open mesh and Kee Dome is an open railing, so light still reaches the building below.

How often does skylight protection need inspecting?

At least annually by a competent person, and again after roof work, alterations or severe weather.

Is skylight protection a legal requirement?

Yes. Employers must prevent or minimise the risk of falls through fragile surfaces, and skylights are classed as fragile however solid they look.
